Belt Sander Racer

Last Friday I participated in a belt sander race at
Losantiville Kunstwerkhaus in celebration of the Summer Sophomore power tool studio. Had a great time and I will be posting some of the video from the event when I get my hands on it.

We all bought the same harbor Freight belt sander, other than that you were allowed to make any modifications you wanted. I was able to get all my supplies from the local junk yard and thrift store.

I went mostly cosmetic, going for a mini batman tumbler aesthetic. The two guide wheels in the front helped keep it in it's track and the anti wheelie wheel in the back was mainly for show. I originally tried a friction drive but after smoking a bunch of tires just went with the belt was my drive source. I switched the belt down to a 40 grit and coated it in rubberized truck bed liner. I only had an evening (the night before!) effectively to put it all together so if I do another it will definitely be more elaborate.

Thanks to Matt Anthony and the folks over at Losantiville for hosting the event and to Professor Peter Chamberlain for helping bring it all together.

Will post more pictures and some video as I get it.

Shoe Progress

In the process of rendering this one out. I'm planning to take this one to the level of the Puma rendering, hopefully further with some of the new tricks I've learned. We'll see.

New Project

Just wrapping up (or starting depending on how tomorrow goes) a project with two other UC students, Ryan and Matt. We present our idea tomorrow at at a Conference for the Center for Cognition, Action and Perception. Hopefully I'll have a process book for the project put together in the next couple of weeks once school wraps up. 5 second description, it a binaural beat creator that uses bone conduction as a delivery system.

Thinking about making a prototype of the grenade launcher this summer!

Revisiting old work

I dug up this render that I did a year or so ago, I used Richard Kuchinsky's Footwear Rendering tutorial as the guideline. Check it out here. Seeing his work for Hummel back in 2006ish was a HUGE part of my decision to go back to school for design. I'm still on the search for his Hummel Mid Characters in my size!

The original render is below, I spruced it up a bit in the new one above added some value and tweaked the proportions, I think they are still a little off but it will do for now.

The honeycomb pattern was created in Illustrator, I vectorized a honeycomb jpg, then used the 3D extrude tool. I could probably get a better result using Alias but for quick and dirty extrudes I really like Illustrator.

Speaker Update

Something was off with the front end so I decided to plug it all up and carve out the speaker port this time, rather than building around a hole. Not sure why I tried it the other way around first time.

Portfolio is Done(ish)

I am done enough with this for right now, really happy with the direction it's going in. I don't want to pose to be graphic designer and I like taking pictures so, case closed. Already see a bunch of stuff I want to tweak and work that I want to add to it. There's a typo on the speaker page, let me know if you see anything else (all 5 of you that read this!)

Alias Rendering Timewasters

Just spent 3 hours playing around on Alias Render, I would like to be able to be knowledgeable enough to setup successful shots in it that are on par or better than Hypershot or Showcase.

I know it's possible, so far no dice....

Minis complete

Four directions for the mini clay mock ups, I'm partial to the two with only 3 legs on the ground, hints at motion a little better. Looks like #4 the chosen one.

Next step: full scale with component mockups inside

Started on my mini clay mock-ups for the speaker. Project is taking a little longer than I thought it would!

Updating portfolio

Currently working on updating my portfolio, here is my cologne bottle sketch page, not 100% happy with it yet but definitely an improvement on my first go at presenting the process I think.
